II. Vision Statement Create, preserve and operate buildings that meet or exceed University needs in a sustainable and efficient manner and effectively communicate and demonstrate these values to current and future generations. CEST Buildings Working Group

III. Buildings Group Commitments & Mandates NC General Statute 143-135.35-.40 (Energy Efficiency in Buildings Law) NC State Commitment to LEED Silver Certified Buildings (New Construction & Renovations over 20,000 SF) NC State Commitment as LED University NC State Commitment to American Colleges & Universities Climate Commitment UNC-GA Sustainability Policy NC State Design & Construction Guidelines FCAP Repair & Renovations CEST Buildings Working Group

IV. Current Status CVM Terry Hospital – LEED Silver pending Facilities Operations Support Space – LEED Silver pending Hunt Library – LEED Silver goal Student Health Center - LEED Silver goal Centennial Campus Student Housing – LEED Silver goal Talley Student Center – LEED Silver goal Nonwovens Facility – LEED Silver goal Cates/ Yarbrough Plants – maximize campus energy efficiency 13 Bldg Performance Contract – improve energy efficiency (lights, HVAC) EB III – green roof Design & Construction Guidelines incorporate Green initiatives Integrated design approach has become the standard design model CEST Buildings Working Group

IV.Current Status (contd) SCO- Life Cycle Cost Analysis and Energy Efficiency Requirements need to be resolved Establishment of sustainable goals at project kick-off with Building Committee Challenges of funding sustainable goals vs programmatic goals Educating users, Building Committee members, etc. CEST Buildings Working Group

V.5 Year Strategies Building strategies: Apply sustainable practices to all new buildings & renovations, including private buildings LEED Silver certification for all projects over 20K GSF Maximize space utilization Minimize new building footprints Create prototype documents for all projects to gain credit for campus-wide initiatives not currently recognized by USGBC Obtain funding & political support to reach goals Build flexible space that can be easily repurposed, plan for multiple uses Consider micro-climate during planning & design Holistic renovations Adaptive re-use and renewal Operable windows & individual controls for occupant comfort Re-use and repurpose materials (doors, windows, hardware) Market campus sustainable efforts, outreach CEST Buildings Working Group

Land use strategies: Consider site during Master Planning to maximize site characteristics and climatic benefits Master Plan for most effective development density Respect and restore local watersheds Reduce energy usage by 20% for all buildings Reduce water usage by 30% for all buildings Employ technologies that help conserve energyReduce energy usage by 20% across campus Reduce water usage by 30% across campus Energy & water strategies: Academic strategies: Increase distance learning initiatives and programs Engage faculty & students and their research CEST Buildings Working Group

Materials & Purchasing strategies: Use materials to help reduce the carbon footprint Encourage use of local materials Refurbish furniture for re-use Waste reduction & recycling strategies: Identify sources that will assist with recycling of materials Employ construction reuse & recycling methods Re-use furniture and other similar items rather than discard to a landfill CEST Buildings Working Group

Special thanks to Tracy for her assistance during this effort!!!!!!
