1 The Home Depot Smart Home at Duke University The first LEED Platinum resident hall in the world. A live-in laboratory for 10 students from diverse backgrounds. More than 60 students working on projects. 2008 Green Educational Program of the Year.

3 Smart Home Completed in November 2007 3800 sq feet or 350 sq meters of living area 5 bedrooms + 3 bathrooms

4 Common Room Central common room open to the second floor. Kitchen + Dining room + Meeting room. Cork floor and natural lighting. High efficiency Energy Star appliances.

5 Clean Lab Computer and printer room. 40 gigabits per second fiber optic internet speed. Natural rubber floor.

6 Media Room Three large LCD HDTV's provide TV, movies, and computer use. Wireless keyboard, mouse, headphones and remotes. Recycled materials used in the carpet

7 Bedrooms Two students per bedroom. Locally harvested wood trim in the Smart Home.

8 Smart Walls Removable panels allows access to interior walls.

9 Rainwater Cisterns 2400 gallons or 9000 liters of rainwater available in basement. Used for flushing toilets and clothes washing machine. An additional 2000 gallons or 7500 liters of rainwater outside.

10 Solar Hot Water 240 gallons or 900 liters of 140F or 60C solar hot water. Backup instant gas hot water heater available.

11 Green Construction The Smart Home was constructed with little waste materials. Conduit for lights, power, data, and fire alarm is color coded.

12 Student Tours Residents at the Smart Home give tours. More than 1000 visitors tour the Smart Home each year.

13 Students + Faculty + Industry The Smart Home brings students and faculty and industry together in unique and educational experiences.

14 Student Projects Systems Monitoring of Energy Usage at the Smart Home Smart Billiards Lighting Controls utilizing the CLIPSAL system RFID tracking within the Smart Home Wireless Power Transmission (Pratt Fellows Program) Solar Tracking to improve efficiency of PV system

15 Live-In Laboratory at Duke University The Smart Home provides leadership and project management experiences outside of the classroom.
