1 These impact maps are a combination of three different impact maps: The backyard and regional impact maps from the food security and agriculture meeting in Castlegar on March 18 Rosslands impact map done at the public meeting on March 3 by community members Kaslos impact maps done by members of the SC The impact maps highlight main ideas that were consistent in most of the maps. Additional items that that were not included in these maps are below. Impacts Weird warm spells Extreme events: hail and heavy snow storms (wet snow) Increased cloud cover Environment/ecosystem response and impacts: Warmer air temperatures leading to more wild animals such as deer and cougar leading to increase crop damage Longer growing season is an opportunity for expanded soft fruit markets Increased water turbidity leading to more damage to irrigation systems Increased fire season leading to more soil erosion Less food for pollinators later on in the season

2 Increase Temperature summer Increase in invasive species Chilling requirements not met Earlier animal activity and better Temperature for some animals Earlier peak flows Insect changes and changes in bee behaviour Longer growing season (increase in growing degree days) Prolonged summer drought Higher water temperatures Earlier budding More options for non-cold tolerant Plants/crops Increase temperature winter/spring L ess water for Summer Irrigation Fruit and nut failure Higher survival for insects & pests Good for Bees Opportunity for new crops Opportunity for higher outputs Increase in livestock and poultry opportunities More work for farmers Drier soil and pasture Increase in crop and livestock productivity Opportunities for new crop varieties New pests could Threaten crops Decrease in crop productivity ?? Less predictability to bee behaviour Increase in disease and insects New insects threaten crops Crop/livestock loss Or decreased productivity Stress on animals Fewer eggs Impacts of temperature changes

3 Summer precipitation decrease Drier soils Decreased water availability Less surface water and lower stream flows Wildfire risk increases Summer drought Winter precipitation Increase (falling as rain At lower elevations) Increase low elevation rain Leading to water run off on frozen soil Less snow pack at lower elevations Less water for irrigation Irrigation needs increase Water restrictions Drought conditions leading to Decreased crop productivity Soil erosion Earlier spring freshet Higher stream flow Top soil loss Heavy rain flooding Infrastructure damage Decrease in Crop productivity ? Increase in avalanches Distribution routes disrupted Food shortages Impacts of precipitation changes
