A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present

The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of waste every year. This rate of rubbish generation would fill the Albert Hall in London in less than 2 hours

On average every person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every 7 weeks

It takes just 25 2 litre drink bottles to make 1 adult size fleece 25

Recycling two glass bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea.

As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted

Every day 80 million food and drinks cans end up in landfill (being buried) - that's one and a half cans per person.

A banana skin can take up to two years to decompose if not disposed of properly

Container glass (bottles and jars) is 100% recyclable and can be used AGAIN FOREVER and AGAIN

Every year the average British family throws away 6 trees worth of paper

More than 30 million inkjet cartridges are dumped each year in the UK alone, equivalent weight of 18 blue whales

Each year UK households throw away the equivalent of 3 ½ million double decker buses (almost 30 million tonnes) A queue would stretch from London to Sydney (Australia) and back

Every disposable nappy that has ever been thrown away, still exists in landfill sites.

The average useful life of plastic carrier bags is 12 mins yet they take between 500 to 1000 years to break down in landfill sites

Rotting food and paper in landfill sites….. produces…….. METHANE

Methane is a Greenhouse Gas 23 times more powerful than CO2 – leading to global warming

Can we do better? We throw out an average of 25 full black bags of rubbish EVERY DAY in our school. Most of this could be reused or recycled….. Can we reduce this ? YES YES

Litter throw your litter on the ground. Use the correct bin. Don’t

Don’t be lazy

We’re still being lazy These are…. DRAINS NOT BINS

Green for general waste, blue for recycled. We should have more blue bins than green…..we can do better – together!

Switch off lights if they are not needed

What can we do? Turn off lights and computers when not in use Reduce our waste Recycle as much as we can Reuse things like plastic bags & paper Use the correct bins for our rubbish

Close our windows to retain heat Keep the curtains open so the sun will warm the room Nominate someone to be responsible for monitoring energy use in each department or have a rota system Use email where possible – cut down on paper use If the classroom is too warm, turn off the radiator! Set computers to go into sleep mode Most importantly – its everyone job! We need to work together as a school community – LET’S DO IT TOGETHER!

Thanks for watching The Eco Committee
