Educate to Innovate A SusChem programme for building skills capacity for a sustainable European chemical sector Susan Fleet - Britest Limited Professor Michael Matlosz - Université de Lorraine

SusChem & Education Education: A horizontal priority considered since the launch of SusChem  The availability of a skilled labour force is essential to the long-term viability and innovative capacity of the European chemical industry Innovation Research Education SusChem enabling technologies addressing societal challenges

Skills for innovation: Industry needs Business skills Personal skills Scientific & Technical skills

Skills needs for innovation: Main findings Critical skills For engineersFor scientists BusinessProject management Innovation management Understanding customers & suppliers IPR Innovation management Understanding customers & suppliers Personal Communication Team work Problem solving Creative thinking Team work Communication Scientific and technical Process Modelling & Simulation, Scale-up, Reaction engineering, Process Design, Biochemical engineering Process Intensification, Safety engineering, Particle science, Nanotechnology, Sustainable chemistry, Materials chemistry. 5 Building Skills Capacity: what needs to be done? At the SusChem workshop “Building Skills Capacity for a Sustainable European Chemical Sector” held at the RSC in October 2011, experts from industry and academia identified together a need for:  Enhanced dialogue and collaboration between HEIs and industry on skills for innovation issues and course development  Greater awareness among HE teaching staff of the benefits of context-based teaching resources  Better dissemination of ‘good practices’ for the introduction of skills for innovation into HE courses (methodologies, course design, involvement of industry and to demonstrate the value active learning)

Educate to Innovate

Objective The Educate to Innovate programme seeks to exploit innovation outputs from SusChem’s Research & Innovation projects to enhance the innovation skills of future generations of scientists and engineers through the effective engagement of industry and higher education institutions (HEIs).

SusChem R&I Projects Innovation themes / approaches SusChem R&I Projects Innovation themes / approaches Dissemination work packages General communication Exploitable results Industrially focused training packages Dissemination work packages General communication Exploitable results Industrially focused training packages An opportunity to move beyond standard project dissemination activity to address identified need Educate to Innovate linking innovation themes to academic teaching at undergraduate / Masters level Educate to Innovate linking innovation themes to academic teaching at undergraduate / Masters level Capture Integrate Capture Integrate GAP

A framework for building innovation skills capacity New Case Studies / Teaching Resources Dialogue / Ideas exchange to enhance innovation skills Development & Testing Innovation Content SusChem related R&I projects EU Industry EU HEIs (chemical / industrial biotechnology) (undergraduate / Masters level) (pilot)

The F 3 Factory Pilot Project  Emerged from SusChem’s Strategic Research Agenda  A large scale multi-faceted innovation project  Strong collaboration across industry and academia  Approaching final year of the project  Training modules identified as a key output from the project  Timely opportunity to assess how innovation outputs can be adapted for use as case studies / educational resources

F 3 Factory Aims & Objectives  Development and implementation of a modular continuous plant for low to medium scale production  Develop radically new modular chemical production technology  Standardise processes and their interfaces INVITE facility opened in October 2011.
