What is SBIR and STTR Small Business Innovation Research Allows 1/3 of the work subcontracted Small Business Technology Transfer Requires SBC 40% and nonprofit research institution 30% a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research and Development (R&D) that has the potential for commercialization

SBIR & STTR Stimulate technological innovation Meet Federal research and development needs Foster and encourage participation in innovation and entrepreneurship by socially and economically disadvantaged persons Increase private-sector commercialization of innovations derived from Federal research and development funding.

Three Phase Program Phase I Objective: establish technical merit, feasibility Award amounts up to $150,000 Time Frame: 6 months Phase II Objective: continue R&D efforts; prototype development Award amounts up to $1,000,000 Time Frame: 2 years Phase III Objective: commercialization No SBIR funds available

Who can participate? Organization Requirements: Proposals only may be submitted by companies that qualify as a small business For profit business Fewer than 500 employees Located in the US 51% owned and controlled by US individuals

What is Innovation NIH SBIR solicitation defines it as…. …. an implementation that is often disruptive of the prevailing product, process, policy, or paradigm and creates an outcome that is more effective, affordable, accessible, easier to use or deliver, and/or provides superior scalability

What gets funded? Evaluation Criteria: Soundness, technical merit, and innovation of the proposed approach to topic or subtopic solution The qualifications of the proposed principal/key investigators, supporting staff and consultants; Potential for commercial (Government or private sector) application and the benefits expected to accrue from this commercialization
