ENERGY RESOURCES IGCSE PHYSICS DHRUV MUKHIJA

What are energy resources? Energy resources are ways to obtain energy. Anything that can produce heat, power life, move objects or produce electricity is an energy resource. Examples of energy resources:  Solar energy  Wind energy  Tidal energy  Geothermal energy  Fossil fuels

Renewable and Non- Renewable Resources Renewable resources They are resources that can be totally replaced or are always available naturally, they are resources that are practically inexhaustible. For example: Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Geothermal Energy. Non- Renewable Resources A natural resource that once consumed cannot be replaced Also known as a finite resource. For example: Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural gases. Minerals and metal ores.

Problems: Too costly Need sunlight Weather dependent What is it? Energy received from the Sun. This is possible as the sun is powered by nuclear fusion reactions. The Sun’s energy is trapped by solar panels It is then transferred into electrical energy. It is a renewable resource Uses: Water Heating Cooking Generate electricity

Wind Energy What is it? It is electrical energy obtained from harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines. The wind turns the windmills- turbines which generate energy directly from the rotating motion of their blades. Wind energy is usually generated in wind farms which occupy a lot of space. It is a renewable resource. Uses: Generate Electricity To propel ships. For mechanical power Problems: Threat to birds. Wind dependent.

TIDAL ENERGY What is it? It is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful forms of power. More predictable than Wind and Solar energy. It is a renewable resource Uses: Tidal electricity Grain mills Very efficient Problems: Expensive Impacts sea life Disrupts tidal cycle Pollutes the water

What is it? Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. It is a renewable resource Uses: Produces electricity It can heat water. Problems: Expensive Region based Transportation Harmful gases released

FOSSIL FUELS What is it? a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. It is a non- renewable resource. Uses: Provide fuel for cars, aero planes. Heat homes Make medicines Produces electricity Problems: Environmental hazards Effects health Acid rain Limited Rising prices
