1. A complete irrigation system is comprised of several main components, each serving a particular function and all working together in combination with the other. This presentation will provide an overview of each of these components—controllers, sprinklers, valves, and PVC Pipe/Fittings Irrigation System Components

2. Controllers A device that turns an irrigation system on and off at a desirable time and operates the system for a preset period of time. In essence, the Controller “controls” the system.

3. Sprinkler Heads Rotary Sprinklers These sprinklers are larger and used in large open spaces. Rotary sprinklers disperse water 25 to 30 feet or more. These heads typically pop-up during use and then retract after watering. Spray Sprinklers These are the most common sprinkler heads used in residential systems. These heads are positioned around the lawn/property. The spacing between sprinklers vary depending on the spray diameter of the sprinkler and the water pressure. Spray sprinklers are never placed more than 15 feet apart. Spray sprinklers are designed to pop-up during watering and retract to below the grass line when not in use.

4. Valves Valves are the mechanical devices that turn the water on and off to the individual sections of a sprinkler system. Water lines cannot provide enough water to water an entire yard at once. Sprinkler system are usually broken into areas/zones with only one zone being irrigated at a time. There are two basic types of valves manual and automatic. There are two basic types of valves Manual Valves: Manual valves require a person to turn them on and off by hand. Manual valves are rarely used today. Automatic Valves: These valves are operated by the electric controller. Wires connect the valve to the controller. When the controller sends the current to the valve, it opens.
