Alternative Energy Sources
Solar Energy Wind Energy Hydro Energy Tidal Energy Geothermal Energy Nuclear Energy Biomass
3
Solar energy Solar electric or photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight (insolation) into electricity. Advantages Renewable – carbon neutral 30 Year Lifetime, low maintenance Reduced electric bill Disadvantages High initial cost Slow payback Can be unreliable unless you're in a very sunny climate.
4
Solar energy Electric Power Capacity (MW)
United States 970,000 Renewable 97,000 Solar 400
5
Wind energy Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form, such as electricity, using wind turbines. Wind Advantages Renewable – carbon neutral Very large resource Economically competitive Large and Small scale applications 30 Year Lifetime Wind Disadvantages Regional Intermittent Some environmental issues
6
Wind energy Electric Power Capacity (MW)
US 970,000 Renewable 97,000 (10%) Wind 6,000

Nuclear energy Nuclear energy originates from the splitting of uranium atoms in a process called fission. At the power plant, the fission process is used to generate heat for producing steam, which is used by a turbine to generate electricity. Advantages Nuclear power plants could still produce electricity after coal and oil become scarce. Nuclear power plants need less fuel than ones which burn fossil fuels. No CO2 emission No Pollution Disadvantages nuclear weapons Nuclear accident Nuclear waste disposal problems. Nuclear reactors only last for about forty to fifty years.

Nuclear energy Electric Power Capacity (MW)
US 970,000 Nuclear 203,700(21%)
9
Geothermal energy Geothermal energy is heat from within the earth.
10
Tidal energy Tidal energy is created by the relative motion of the Earth, Moon, Sun, and the gravitational interactions between them.
