Endangered Species Endangered Speices Definitions Vulnerable Species: A species that is not yet threatened, but one whose population is quickly declining and decreasing. Threatened Species: A species whose population is not low enough to be considered endangered, but one whose population could soon be considered endangered if nothing is done to prevent further decline in population. Endangered Species: A species of plant or animal whose population is so low they are in danger of becoming extinct. Extinct Species: A species of plant or animal that no longer has a living population.

Endangered Species Endangered or not? In New York State there are thirty three different endangered species, of which twenty three are animals and ten are plants. Twelve of the nineteen endangered animals can be found living in or near water. One of the ten plants in New York is located in swampy waters.
3
Endangered Species What is endangered? An endangered species is a species of animals whose population is so low that extinction could soon be a possibility for that animal species.
4
Endangered Species Causes of Endangering Environmental Destruction Humans have a profound effect on the environment and the habitats of plants and animals. As discusses in the Water Quality Lesson, humans often times contaminate environments and habitats with chemicals and sewage, killing off many plant and animal life.
5
Endangered Species Causes of Endangering Introduction of New Species When new species are introduced into an environment, they oftentimes prey on the native species in that environment. Islands see the most amount of endangered species when new species are introduced into the environment.
6
Endangered Species Causes of Endangering Excessive Hunting The hunting of certain species of animals have created endangered species across the globe. Whether it was whaling during the 1900s or the hunting of forest creatures today, overhunting has created a huge endangered animal population.
7
Endangered Species Causes of Endangering Disease Disease is among the number one killer of species populations, humans included. If an animal does not have protection against certain diseases, one infection in an environment can result in huge population loss.

Endangered Species Importance of Plants and Animals Medically, plants are used to make prescription drugs that fight off disease and infections. Agriculturally, plants are used as foods by millions of animals, including humans. Ecologically, plants and animals create functioning ecosystems. Without a certain plant or animal, ecosystems can die.

Endangered Species How to help Conserve Plants and Animals The creation of nature preserves and national parks is a great way to conserve the populations of plants and animals, as well as prevent them from becoming extinct. Follow rules and regulations when visiting national parks to ensure wild life safety.

Endangered Species How to help Recycle and Protect Producing less garbage and recycling papers, plastics, metals, etc. can help clean up the environment and allow for more wildlife to grow. Protecting the environment by using less harmful chemicals is a great way to help preserve wildlife in an area.

Endangered Species How to help Replant Endangered Plants Planting native plants can help promote the growing population of the world’s endangered plants. By planting endangered species of plants in your community can promote the population growth of both plant and animal life in your area. Also, controlling foreign plants can help prevent the extinction of native plants in your area.
