LEED: Building a Green Campus By: Paul Shephard

History of LEED The first LEED Pilot Project Program was launched at the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) Membership Summit in 1998. LEED was created to rate buildings based on the building’s overall sustainability.

LEED LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. There are four LEED rankings for buildings: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

LEED LEED recognizes performance in seven categories: 1. Energy and Atmosphere (35 points) 2. Sustainable Site (26 points) 3. Indoor Environmental Quality (15 points) 4. Water and Efficiency (10 points) 5. Materials and Resources (14 points) 6. Innovation in Design (6 points) 7. Regional Priority (4 points)

LEED Despite being expensive to build, the difference is made up in a short amount of time due to the energy savings, such as heating and cooling.

Other Campuses Arizona State University has six LEED-certified green buildings on campus, one of which received a Platinum ranking. All new construction on campus must adhere to LEED Silver standards.

Fredonia Campus SUNY Fredonia only has one LEED-certified building, the University Commons. Its ranking is only Certified.

Future The Day Care Center being built on the Fredonia Campus is expected to at least be a LEED-certified silver. All future buildings on campus are going to follow LEED Silver standards.
