 Hydroelectric – 25%  Biomass – 20%  Coal – 17%  Natural gas – 15%  Geothermal – 11.5%  Solar Energy – 11.5%

Biomass Geothermal Hydroelectric Natural Gas

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  It is a renewable energy source  It produces energy  It is produced form moving water and there is a lot of water in Michigan (Great Lakes)  You have to construct a dam to hold it back  Dam designs can change the natural course of a river

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  It is a renewable energy source  It is organic  When it is burned it produces heat so it can heat homes  It produces electricity  Reduces the nutrients returned to the soil by decomposing  Crops are not available all year  Biomass collection is difficult

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  We have a lot of Coal in Michigan  It is not too expensive  The electricity produced from coal is reliable  Coal can be safely stored  Burning coal makes harmful waste like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide.  May make acid rain  Coal mining can ruin a landscape

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Burns cleaner than other fossil fuels  It produces 70% less carbon dioxide  Has a very high heating value  It is not very expensive  It is very highly flammable so it needs to be highly protected and managed  Managing and making the pipelines used to transport natural gas can be a lot of money

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  It is a renewable energy source  It does not create any pollution  Building a geothermal power plant is not too much money compared to other power plants  Geothermal energy is very clean  The cost of the design and installation can cost a lot  The area needed to lay the piping system must be pretty big  Geothermal energy is not easily transported

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Is a renewable energy source  Solar energy does not require any fuel  Solar energy is abundant  It is clean  Can store heat and release it whenever it is needed  The cost of purchasing and installing solar panels is very high  Most solar powers only have an efficiency rate of 40%  The production of solar energy is changed by how many clouds and pollution is in the air

 We chose Hydroelectric Energy as one of our resources for a few reasons. First of all, it is a renewable energy source. So we never have to worry about it running our for now. Second of all, we have a ton of water in Michigan. Last of all, it was already being used a little in Michigan so it wouldn’t hurt too much if we increased its uses a little more.

 We chose Biomass Energy as one of our Energy Resources because it is a Renewable Energy Source. Not only is it renewable but as long as we have farms it will not be hard to make Biomass Energy. At the moment we barely use Biomass Energy in Michigan. So it would be good if we started using it more.

 We chose coal as one of energy sources for 2 reasons. First of all, we have a lot of coal in Michigan. With that much coal we can still use it for about 250 more year. Second of all, it is being used so much right now it would be almost impossible to stop using it.

 We chose Natural Gas as one of our energy source for two reasons. First of all, it burns much cleaner than any other fossil fuel. Second of all, it is being used so much right now. It would be very hard to stop using it.

 We chose Geothermal Energy as one of our Energy Resource for two reasons. First of all, it is a Renewable Energy Source. Second of all, you can get Geothermal Energy wherever you are, as long as you can get through the layer of rock in the Earth.

 We chose Solar Energy as one of our Energy Resources for two reasons. First of all, it is a Renewable Energy Source. Second of all, there is always sun in Michigan in the day time. So it won’t be a problem getting the sunlight.
