The EC programme aimed at building competitive industries, better societies and excellence in science The programme is envisaged to support projects that will bridge the gap between research and market/industry From 2014-2020 with a budget of 70 B € Bring together the FP, Competitive and innovation programme (CIP) and the Europe initiative of innovation and technology (EIT) Addressing people’s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment Strengthening the EU’s global position in research, innovation and technology What is Horizon 2020

What’s new A single programme bringing together 3 separate programmes /initiatives (FP7, EIT and CIP) Coupling research to innovation –from research to retail, covering all forms of innovation Focus on challenges facing society, e.g. health, food, clean energy, transport Simplified access for all companies, universities, institutes, in all EU countries and beyond Europe Same rules for all programmes

H2020 Priorities Excellent science (24 418.00) - Frontier research, future and emerging techs, MCA and research infrastructure Industrial leadership (24 767.00) - Leadership in enabling and industrial techs (NMP, Space, biotech, materials etc), access to risk finance (private and VC), and I innovation in SMEs Societal challenges (31 748.00 + 1 788.00 from Euratom 2014-2018) - Health, food security, energy, environment, transport

Industrial leadership Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies (LEITs) - ICT, nanotech, materials, biotech, manufacturing, space: 13 557 Access to risk finance - Leveraging private finance and venture capital for research and innovation2 842 Innovation in SMEs - Fostering all forms of innovation in all types of SMEs: 616 + complemented by expected 20% of budget of societal challenges + LEITs and 'Access to risk finance' with strong SME focus

Simplified Rules A single set of rules: Adapted for the whole research and innovation cycle - Covering all research programmes and funding bodies One project –one funding rate - Maximum of 100% of the total eligible costs (except for innovation actions, where a 70% maximum will apply for profit making entities) - Indirect eligible costs: a flat rate of 25% of direct eligible costs Simple evaluation criteria - Excellence –Impact –Implementation (Excellence only, for the ERC)

9. Simplified Rules..... Simpler rules for grants - broader acceptance of participants accounting practices for direct costs, flat rate for indirect costs, no time-sheets for personnel working full time on a project, possibility of output-based grants Fewer, better targeted controls and audits Improved rules on intellectual property A new emphasis on open access to research publications
