2. Cities – Key for Europe 78% of EU‘s population lives in cities.
85% of EU‘s GDP is generated there.
Cities deliver on jobs, growth, investments, innovation and CO2 reduction, to name a few ...
Today 78% of European citizens live in cities, and 85% of the EU’s GDP is generated in cities.
Many European cities are forerunners in the much-needed transition towards a low carbon, resource efficient and competitive economy.
Cities are central to delivering on key challenges for Europe’s society and economy: jobs, growth and investment, innovation, energy efficiency, low-carbon development and CO2-reduction - to name a few.

3. Why Smart Cities Challenges Fragmented markets.
Lack of new business models and financing solutions.
Need for knowledge sharing and capacity building.
Challenges
Markets are often fragmented, missing out on their full economic potential.
Many innovative solutions require new business models and financing solutions for decreasing risk.
Since demand for better infrastructures and services is high but public budget is under pressure, knowledge needs to be shared effectively and capacities developed.

4. Why Smart Cities Opportunities
Improving quality of live, competitiveness and sustainability.
Exporting European knowledge in a strong growth market estimated globally at € 1.3 trillion in 2020!
Opportunities
Linking and upgrading infrastructures, technologies and services in key urban sectors (transport, buildings, energy, ICT) in a smart way will improve quality of life, competitiveness and sustainability of our cities.
This is a strong growth market, estimated globally to be worth €1.3 trillion in a great export market for European business.

The EIP SCC is an initiative supported by the European Commission bringing together cities, industry, SMEs, banks, research and other smart city actors.

6. EIP Action Cluster Commitments are our projects! We have
+4,300 partners
370 commitments
31 countries
It is about scale, acceleration, impact, common solutions, integrated approches and collaboration.
‘Commitments’ are our projects. We have 4000 partners, 370 Commitments from 31 countries. Commitments are measurable and concrete smart city engagements/actions from public and private partners.
6 Action Clusters focus on specific issues related to smart cities. They all build on synergies to help efficient implementation and replication of commitments/solutions.
They explore new fields of activities and business models.
Our Action Clusters meet regularly. These meetings provide the opportunity to network and collaborate with leading smart city actors allowing for new perspectives and insights.
It’s all about scale, acceleration, impact, common solutions, integrated approaches and collaboration.

8. Action Cluster – One Example
AC Integrated Infrastructures – ‚Humble Lamppost‘
Smarten lampposts for multiple purposes, e.g.
LED lighting, electric charging station, sensors
Saving potential:
50 – 75% of energy costs
GHG reductions equals removing 2.6 million cars
The scale of lighting across Europe is significant – there are some million lampposts, 75% of which are more than 25 years old. They consume around €3 billion in energy: 25-50% of a city’s energy bill.

Memorandum of Understanding on more interoperable Urban Platforms
Action Cluster on Citizen Focus:
A handbook ‘Best practices for citizen engagement’ highlights in ten principles how to engage citizens better in your smart cities initiatives and shows related examples from across Europe.
Action Cluster on Integrated Planning, Policy and Regulation:
The six-nation forum consisting of Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and UK have developed a blueprint for national Smart Cities strategies based on their experience. It will guide you through topics such as policy-setting, governance, funds, market engagement and monitoring at national level. You will be able to read it shortly.
Action Cluster on Integrated Infrastructures:
Preliminary results of the survey on Urban Platforms which was replied to by 29 cities show that two thirds of respondents have not yet the right tools in place to manage the data flows in their cities. A Memorandum of Understanding Urban Platforms by industry players intends to develop more interoperable platforms. A decision tool for smart lampposts is being tested by the cities in the cluster. It provides the outline value case for the additional use cases (like wi-fi).
