1 The Earth’s Layers Foldable Information
This powerpoint will contain everything you will need included in your earth’s layers foldable we constructed in class.

2 Bellringer Write a 1-minute journal on how a peach is like the earth’s layers.

4 The Four Layers The Earth is composed of four different layers. The crust is the layer that you live on, and it is the most widely studied and understood. The mantle is much hotter and has the ability to flow. The outer core and inner core are even hotter with pressures so great you would be squeezed into a ball smaller than a marble if you were able to go to the center of the Earth!

5 CRUST: Composition: Made of Silicon (Si), Oxygen (O), and Aluminum (Al) Thickness: The thinnest layer 0-32 KM ( miles) State of Matter: Solid cool rock Temperature: 200° to 400°C (392°F to 752°F)

6 Still CRUST: Interesting Facts: The outermost layer of the earth
Two types of crust: oceanic, continental Oceanic (ocean floor) is thinner continental (mountains) is thicker It is part of the Lithosphere. Lithosphere: crust and upper mantle

7 MANTLE Composition: Made of Magnesium (Mg), Si and O. Thickness:
The largest layer 2,868 KM (1,800 miles) State of Matter: Plastic-like - Hot liquid magma Temperature: 870° to 2200°C (1,598°F to 3992 °F)

8 Still MANTLE: Interesting Facts:
There are three parts: Upper mantle, Middle Mantle, and Lower Mantle (80% of Earth) No one has ever drilled into the mantle. It is part of the Asthenosphere. Convection currents cause UPLIFT, moving molten rock closer to the crust/surface. Tectonic plates move around on the mantle.

9 THE Outer CORE Composition: Made of Iron and Nickle Thickness:
2,300 KM (1,429 miles) State of Matter: Hot molten liquid Temperature: 2200° to 5000°C (3992° to 9032 °F)

10 THE Outer CORE Interesting Facts:
The outer core spins around the inner core. This motion creates a magnetic center.

11 THE Inner CORE Composition: Made of Iron and Nickle Thickness:
1,300 KM (808 miles) State of Matter: Solid iron Temperature: 5000° to 6000°C (9032° to °F)

12 THE Inner CORE Interesting Facts: Is the hottest layer of the Earth.
Is a magnet due to the spin of the outer core.
