Study Hall: Sit in assigned seats, working on something quietly.

Warm Up - 2 minutes Label page with date (November 19) & answer the ? Nighttime temperatures are getting colder and the heat is set at 72° F in your home. How do all the rooms stay warm and near 72 °F?

Share with the Class? Volunteers? Heated air in your house is constantly moving Warmer air is less dense and rises, while cooler air is heavier (more dense) and sinks As the air moves, circulating currents of air form These currents of air move throughout your house, warming all the rooms AIR ALWAYS MOVES FROM AREAS OF WARMER TEMPERATURES TO COOLER TEMPERATURES

(2 nd Block only) Quiz Results and Tracking You will receive your quiz back along with a new tracking sheet Complete your new tracking sheet: Name and Block Number Objective: Electromagnetic Spectrum 6.P.3.2 Write in your score and color in the appropriate number of boxes

Write on the graphic organizer Mechanical Energy Box when two objects push or pull on each other over a distance

Write on the graphic organizer Electrical Energy Box when an electrical source such as a battery or generator is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device

Write on the graphic organizer Thermal Energy Box when a warmer object is in contact with a cooler one For example… Hot coffee inside a mug warming cold hands in the winter

Write on the graphic organizer Electromagnetic Box Radiation from the sun is energy which travels across distances by electromagnetic waves

Video on Discovery Ed “Heat Transmission: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation”

Write on the graphic organizer Conduction Box Heat traveling through solids when two things are touching (pan on a stove burner; heat from burner travels into the metal pan, causing the temperature of the pan to rise)

Write on the graphic organizer Radiation Box Heat moving across the space between two objects that are not touching (If you hold your hand over a pan or near an iron to see if it is hot)

Write on the graphic organizer Convection Box Heat traveling through liquids and gases in a circular pattern (convection currents)

Glue in notebook “Types of Energy graphic organizer” Homework Due Wednesday: Draw a picture to represent each form of energy (in notebook)

Video on Discovery Ed “Seven Forms of Energy”

Remember…..Heat Transfer If 2 things are touching…. conduction If something heated is rising or circulating in liquids or gases….. convection If heat moves across spaces between 2 things that are not touching…. radiation

Interactive Notebook Q2 Add entry to Table of Contents “ Examples of Thermal Energy” Assign the next number

Interactive Notebook Q2 Label Next Available Page: “Examples of Thermal Energy” Number page to match Table of Contents entry Circle the number

Now its your turn…. Examples of Thermal Energy Draw this diagram in your notebook (cover the entire page) ConductionConvection Radiation

Write each statement in the correct column…….. Hot coffee is stirred with a spoon and the spoon gets hot

Write each statement in the correct column…….. A chair is placed near a fireplace. The side of the chair closest to the fireplace gets warm

Write each statement in the correct column…….. A lava lamp contains colored liquids. These liquids form globs that break off and rise to the top when the lamp is turned on.

Write each statement in the correct column…….. A college student holds her hand near an iron to see if it is hot.

Write each statement in the correct column…….. Warm air rises in a room.

Write each statement in the correct column…….. In the ocean, the water near the surface is warmer while the water at the bottom is cooler

Write each statement in the correct column…….. You flip your pillow over and it feels cool on your face.

Interactive Notebook Q2 Add entry to Table of Contents “Energy Transfer” Assign the next number

Interactive Notebook Q2 Label Next Available Page: “ Energy Transfer” Number page to match Table of Contents entry Circle the number

Energy Transfer Worksheet You will now receive an “Energy Transfer” worksheet For each example, you will write whether the energy described is an example of – Electrical – Mechanical – Electromagnetic – Thermal We will do the first 3 together as a class

Glue in notebook Glue your “Energy Transfer” worksheet into your notebook (if not finished, complete for homework too)
