 Positive Influences of Climate  Good tourist industry in subtropics like Florida;  Sports are affected: golf——summer, hockey— —winter;  Religious tradition of Christmas strongly associated with winter conditions;  Clothes——fashion changes with the season;  School closed during summer season in temperate zone.  Farming, fishing are affected by seasonal conditions

 Complete case study page 82, ‘Growing Coffee in Brazil’. Answer questions 9 (use reproducible worksheet 5.3), 10, 11.

 Negative Influences of Climate  Transportation is affected;  Winter tires in temperate zone;  Snow clearing budgets can be high;  School closed during winter storms in temperate zone.  Hurricanes tornados and tropical storms occur in specific regions on a regular basis --- involves protection of property, evacuation plans, family safety plans, cleanup budgets and insurance.

 Read pgs 87 to 89 and answer qns 12 and 13

 Greenhouse Effect: Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane). As it reaches the Earth's surface, land, water, and biosphere absorb the sunlight’s energy. Once absorbed, this energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up. The greenhouse effect is important. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger (continued burning of fossil fuels, cutting down of large amounts of forest), it could make the Earth warmer than usual aka ‘Global Warming’. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals, ex: melting of glaciers – rising sea levels, expansion of deserts, disruption of climate patterns

 Destruction of the Ozone: The ozone layer is a belt of naturally occurring ozone gas that sits 9.3 to 18.6 miles (15 to 30 kilometers) above Earth and serves as a shield from the harmful ultraviolet B radiation emitted by the sun. Today, there is widespread concern that the ozone layer is deteriorating due to the release of pollution (CFC’s – chlorofluorocarbons in aerosol sprays) containing the chemicals chlorine and bromine which attack and destroy ozone molecules. Such deterioration allows large amounts of ultraviolet B rays to reach Earth, which can cause skin cancer and cataracts in humans and can disrupt the reproductive cycles of small animals as well.
