1. What does the term subduction mean? 2. What happens when a plate is subducted? 3. Subduction occurs only at what type of plate boundary?
3
◦ Crust (solid) ◦ Mantle (semi solid) ◦ Outer Core (semi solid) ◦ Inner Core (solid)
4
Made of rock, soil, etc. Is the outermost layer of the Earth Divided into continental crust and oceanic crust Continental crust (contain continents). “Float” on the upper mantle. Oceanic crust (contains the seafloor). Is pressed deeper into mantle than the continents.
5
Lithosphere: what the continental/oceanic crust is sitting on. Is solid. Asthenosphere: below the crust (just on the mantle). Has the ability to flow. Is what actually moves the continental/oceanic crust.
7
Composed of Magnesium, Iron, Aluminum, Silicon, and Oxygen. Mostly solid, but sometimes it gets so hot that the mantle can “flow” under pressure. Hot rock rises. Cooler rock descends. This creates slow moving convection currents.
9
Semi solid layer Is made of liquid Iron + nickle. Is what creates Earth’s magnetic field (because Iron is a good conductor of electricity)
11
At very center of the Earth. Solid ball of Iron. Solid because of the intense pressure from rest of Earth’s layers. Iron is radioactive so it gives off heat to outer core and mantle
14
How will you get through each layer? What items will you take with you? What will you see? How will it feel in each layer? What could go wrong?
