Decimals: Which is largest? a. 0.5 b. 0.15 c. 0.05 Which is smallest? a. 2.66 b. 2.36 c. 2.87
3
Addition of decimals: Add: 5.33 + 22.7 +.08 =
4
Addition of decimals: 5.33 22.7 +0.08 28.11 *Make sure the decimal points line up.
5
Multiplying Decimals: When multiplying decimals, be sure the decimal is placed in the correct position in the answer (product). 1.2 x 3.2 = ? How many decimal places will be in the answer?
6
MULTIPLYING DECIMALS: Try this: 1.35 x 0.65 = How many decimal places in this answer? How many places to the right of all decimals combined?
7
Multiplication by Decimal Movement Move the decimal to the right the same number of places as zeros in the number by which you are multiplying* Example: 0.5532 x *1000 = 553.2 or 0.003 x *10,000 = 30 (add zeros to the right of the number)
8
Dividing Decimals: Quotient Divisor Dividend Divide: 175 by 5 =
9
Division by whole number: Now... Divide 17.5 by 5 17.5/ 5 = How is your answer different?
10
Division by Decimal Movement: When dividing by 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 etc., move the decimal to the left, the same number of places as there are zeros in the divisor. Example: 0.46 divided by 10 = 0.046 520.20 divided by 1000 = 0.5202 10 Divided by 1000 = 0.01
11
Dividing Decimals by Decimals: Suppose you had to divide 5.5 by 0.35? What is the first step?
12
Rounding Off Decimals Rounding to the nearest tenth (carry the division to the hundredths place, if the number in the hundredths place is 5 or greater, add one to the tenths place) ◦ Ex: 3.15 to the nearest tenth = 3.2 ◦ Ex: 5.516 to the nearest tenth = 5.5 ◦ Ex: 7.582 to the nearest tenth = 7.6
13
Rounding Off Decimals Rounding to the nearest Hundredths (carry the division to the thousandths place, if the number in the thousandths place is 5 or greater, add one to the hundredths place) Ex: answer = 0.174 (drop the 4 = 0.17) Ex: answer = 0.175 (add 1 to the hundredths place = 0.18)
