Energy consumption in various regions

Significant increase of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs. due to human activities since Industrial Revolution. Global warming will lead to adverse impacts on sustainable development The GHG concentrations have to be stabilized to a level that would not threaten the survival of mankind The economic development in developing countries will continue and hence will increase the emissions of GHGs.

Malaysians Initiatives A GEF funded project aims to reduce such barriers and will contribute to the rational use and improved energy efficiency in Malaysian industries. In particular, capacity-building demonstration incentive schemes will be established to address inadequate information and perceived risk among industrial producers. Total investment US$12.6 M GEF fund US$ 7.5 M

Contract to supply energy audit equipment was awarded on February 2001 following an international competitive bidding process; Series of MoUs between representatives for eight industrial sectors and the MECM were signed allowing access for the audit teams to the industries; Four sectoral energy audit teams will be formed and twelve preliminary energy audits will be carried out followed by four detailed audits.

Malaysians Initiatives From 2001, Malaysia offers tax incentives for imports of equipment that improve energy efficiency Request GEF funding for energy generation using palm oil mills waste -- Min of Energy Research in the usage of palm oil as a biofuel -- PORIM Awareness programme on building energy efficiency – with DANCED

How could WBCSD members contribute to address the challenge ? Transfer of technology Direct investment & technology partnership Energy generation Demand side management Renewable energy Energy efficiency Transport

Members of WBCSD could influence their respective governments to promote enabling environment, joint R&D and capacity building. Partnership in assisting developing countries in attaining sustainable development, modifying their long-term trend of GHG emissions. Activities Implemented Jointly (AIJ) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM )

Conclusion Need to have a paradigm shift in investment goal and strategies Need to consider socio-economic development and sustainable development in any investment Technology partnership
