2 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: can be used: -to identify a material, -to choose a material for a specific purpose, -to separate the substances in a mixture Physical properties only change the appearance of the substance, NOT its chemical makeup.

3 EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

4 VISCOSITY The tendency of a liquid to keep from flowing: RANK IN ORDER of Increasing viscosity.

5 CONDUCTIVITY A materials ability to allow heat to flow through it. Rank in order of increasing Conductivity.

6 MALLEABILITY The ability of a solid to be hammered without shattering. Rank in order of increasing malleability.

7 Melting or Boiling Point The temperature at which the state Of matter changes (solid to liquid, Liquid to gas.) Which has a higher melting point?

8 DENSITY ratio between mass and volume. Can be used to test purity, since all substances have specific, unchanging densities. It is a measure of how much mass is in a certain volume.

11  Characteristics that describe the composition of matter.  Think of it as potentials.  Dry paper has the potential to burn; therefore it is flammable.

12 EXAMPLES: FLAMMABILITY -ability to Burn in the presence of oxygen. REACTIVITY- how readily a substance combines chemically with other substances.
