1
THE CARBON CYCLE
2
Importance of Carbon all living things are made of carbon-containing molecules (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, nucleic acids) organisms use carbon compounds for energy
3
Where Carbon is Found CO2 in the atmosphere
4
Stored in all living things
5
oceans – dissolved CO2, carbonates from shells
6
rocks – limestone (formed from marine sediments)
7
fossil fuels – from remains of dead plants and animals
8
Respiration and photosynthesis
plants convert CO2 into sugars (photosynthesis)
9
animals, plants and decomposers break down sugars and other molecules for energy (cellular respiration) and release CO2 back into the atmosphere
10
Reactions: Photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water + energy glucose(sugar) + oxygen Cellular Respiration Glucose(sugar) + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy
11
The Greenhouse Effect methane (CH4) and CO2 are greenhouse gases
trap the sun’s heat in the atmosphere necessary for life on Earth
12
Human Impacts increase in greenhouse gases can lead to climate change
burning of fossil fuels and wood puts more CO2 into the atmosphere removing forests reduces the amount of CO2 being taken out
13
Oxygen Cycle connected to the carbon cycle
respiration uses oxygen from the atmosphere photosynthesis produces oxygen – this is the main source of atmospheric oxygen
