2016 SAT Redesign overview

2016 SAT(Debuts March 2016) 1. Timing: 3 hours and 50 min w/Essay 2. Scoring: 400-1600 A. Subscore and Cross-test scores available 3. NO guessing penalty 4. Format: Print OR Online

SAT Components 1. Essay (optional)…. However, NOT optional for AVID students (separate score) 2. Reading (200-800 pts- Reading/Writing/& Langauge) 3. Writing and Language 4. Math (200-800 points)

Essay Test Description: Students can demonstrate college and career readiness proficiency in producing a cogent and clear written analysis using evidence drawn from an appropriately challenging source text written for a broad audience.

Essay 1. 50 minutes 2. 1 prompt, passage-based 3. Graded on the following: A. Reading- understand main ideas and thesis of passage and prompt use of textual evidence B. Analysis- evaluate author’s use of evidence; reasoning; persuasive elements C. Writing- use of a central claim (you write a THESIS statement!!!) Organization; word choice; sentence structure; appropriate style; grammar 4. KEY FEATURES- Common prompt; analysis of argument; clear evaluation criteria

Reading Test Description: Students can demonstrate college and career readiness proficiency in reading and comprehending a broad range of high-quality, appropriately challenging literary and informational texts in the content areas of U.S. and World literature, history, and science.

Reading 1. 65 minutes 2. 52 questions 3. ALL passage based 4. Multiple Choice (4 options) 5. Passage Breakdown: A. Literature: 1 passage (20%) B. History: 2 passages (40%) Includes 1-2 graphics for analysis C. Science: 2 passages (40%) Includes 1 graphic for analysis

Writing & Lang. Test Description: Students can demonstrate college and career readiness and proficiency in revising and editing a range of texts in a variety of content areas, both academic and career related, for expression of ideas and for conformity to the conventions of standard written English grammar, usage, and punctuation… Basically, testing your grammar!

Writing & Lang. 1. 35 minutes 2. 44 questions 3. All passage based A. Careers (25%) B. History (25%) C. Humanities (25%) D. Science (25%) E. Some passages will contain graphics for analysis 4. Multiple Choice (4 options)

Math Test Description: Students have fluency with, understanding of, and the ability to apply the mathematical concepts, skills, and practices that are most strongly prerequisite and central to their ability to progress through a range of college courses, career training, and career opportunities.

Math 1. Total Time: 80 Minutes 2. Total Questions: 57 A. Calculator Section 37 questions/55 minutes B. No-Calculator Section 20 questions/25 minutes 2. Total Questions: 57 A. Multiple Choice (4 options)- 45 questions (75%) B. Student-Produced (grid-in)- 11 questions (18%) C. Extended Thinking (grid-in)- 1 question (7%)

Math 3. Four Content Areas A. Heart of Algebra B. Problem Solving & Data Analysis C. Passport to Advanced Math (re-writing expressions; quadratic/higher-order equations; polynomials) D. Additional Math Topics (area/volume calculations; trigonometry; lines, angles, triangles, circles using theorems…)
