PAS and Papers l JetMET is a service organization that also produces public results è PAS and papers to support both CMS and the careers of our young physicists ! è 9 PAS approved on 2010 data so far. l PAS and papers coming up for approval soon è Jet Energy Resolution PAS (JME ) è MET JINST Paper (JME ) à Impressive compendium on MET pre-approved this week. è Jet Calibration and Resolution Paper (JME ) à Planned to document our data-driven determinations of jet performance. l Work in JetMET and get your results published ! 4

Status and Plans for each Sub-Group 5

MET Top 5 Missions in Publish MET JINST before 2011 run:  MET scale and resolution in  + jets, Z+ jets, dijets events using 36 pb Study Pile-Up Effects PF MET resolution is worsened by σ ~  n x 3 GeV for n pileup events 3. Study MET tail ð Launched “MET Hotline” prompt feedback team with DPG’s (MET Scanners) ð MET tail due to anomalous signals in calorimeter, jets in boundary, masked towers/cells, beam halo is understood for Improve MET ð Uniform noise cleaning on all MET objects: PFclusterMET ð Type I and II correction for PFMET in addition to CaloMET ð MET significance based on PF 5. MET& MHT triggers (with PFlow) 6

MET Scale and Resolution l CMS precisely measures MET scale and resolution using  and Z events l Scale uncertainty for these events (5%). Help needed to translate uncertainty to other events: see è Response with 1 PV Resolution (|| and ) with 1 PV ┴ JME : MET JINST

MET resolution with pile-up l MET Resolution given by the process, noise and pile-up   2 = [a q T + b] 2 + [  noise f ES (q T ) ] 2 + (N-1) [  PU f ES (q T ) ] 2 è N is number of reconstructed primary vertixes   PU ~ 3 GeV is the intrinsic pile-up resolution for pfMET or tcMET è f ES (q T ) is the energy scale correction applied on each event l With 15 interactions pile-up will dominate è Need better control for 2011 run è Working on this will be a MET priority 8 Resolution with Pile-Up (tcMET) JME : MET JINST

MET Tails l CMS understands how to tag and remove Beam Halo l CMS understands the effect of dead channels and cracks on MET è Plan for Ecal hole corr (TPG) in future & ongoing work is needed l CMS understands contributions of anomalous energies to 1 part in 10 6 è But more work needed in cooperation with the DPG’s è Work needed on tails when reco changes happen. è MET scanners meets weekly on Wednesday’s at 14:30 (see MET hypernews and JetMET indico page). 9 Events with Jet in ECAL Hole Fraction of Events Effect on MET of Dead Ecal Cells 10  1 JME : MET JINST

MET Significance Using PF MET significance (S) quantifies the compatibility of MET with the object resolutions like a  2   2 like behavior in jet events l Improved separation of signal from background for W’s è Better than MET  Better than MET / √  E T 10 PF MET Significance PF MET Significance MET JME : MET JINST

Jet Energy Corrections 11

Jet Energy Correction Plans l JEC + JER Paper l Pile-Up Corrections (L1) è First data-driven corrections available (next slides) more work planned. l Update relative (L2) and Absolute (L3) corrections for 2011  Critical work on data-driven residual corrections from dijet,  +jet, Z+jet & top. l Flavor Corrections (L5 and L7) è Plan to develop and release new flavor corrections soon è Additional uncertainty on b-jet scale recently reduced from 5% to 2-3%. l Monte Carlo Truth è Corrections for both FullSim and now also FastSim are planned. l Reduce Uncertainties è Goal of reducing current 3-5% uncertainties to about 1% level with 1 fb -1 12

Pile-Up Corrections l CMS has two methods for the correction which agree within systematics 1)L1offset: subtract mean E T, measured in zero bias events as a function of N PV 2)L1FastJet subtraction using median jet energy density and an estimate of UE.L1FastJet 13 Pile-Up E T vs. N PV from Offset and FastJet Methods

Pile-Up Recommendations l Pile-up corrections will be needed for 2011 data analysis at high luminosity è Can be useful cross check for 2010 analyses that may be sensitive to pileup l Use of both L1offset and L1FastJet are described in CMS workbook l Baseline recommendation (L1offset): è Default JEC from MC Truth + L1L2L3Residuals in workbook l Alternate recommendation (L1FastJet) è Default JEC from MC Truth + L1FastL2L3Residuals in workbook è FastJet with CMS modification that restores UE, so only pile-up is subtracted  UE density  UE = 1.07 GeV is manually set the same for all events  Need to understand possible dependence of  UE with physical process. l Can’t use L1 corrections along with charged hadron removal (PFNoPU) yet è Implement this in the future when PFNoPU should be more widely used. 14

Absolute Calibration l Multiple calibration channels will be critical to reaching 1% uncertainty   +jet most important channel with high statistics and established technique è Z+jet is an essential cross check and the Z can be measured with tracker è Top is starting to be used and should constrain the light quark energy scale à Example of collaboration with Top PAG where analysis is being done. l We plan to make use of all these channels in 2011 to reduce uncertainty 15  + Jet: Response vs PT Z + Jet: Response Top: Light Quark E 2010 Data: Light Quark E scale to 4% Stat Error

Jet Algorithms 16

Jet Algorithms Plans for 2011 l JEC + JER Paper l Jet Resolution è Measurements of jet resolution and its uncertainty for PAG use & publications. è Measure resolution in presence of significant pile-up. è Studies on improving jet resolution with HO l Jet ID and Quality è Measurements of efficiency and background rejection for baseline jet ID è Developments in all area’s to improve and understand jet quality à Impact of Ecal spikes, Hot, and Dead regions of the calorimeter l Specialized Algorithms (no service points) è Jet substructure à Tagging and pruning to identify massive boosted objects (top, W, higgs, etc.) è Miscellaneous: algorithm dejour, quark-gluon separation, etc. l Jet Algorithms needs additional contributors for 2011 effort ! 17

Jet Energy Resolution l Measurement of Resolution and estimation of uncertainties è Both the Gaussian core (for QCD) and the tails (for SUSY)  Using both dijet and  + jet events, which agree for both core and tails.  Comparison with MC and understanding of differences (  calibrations, etc) è Example of DPG-POG-PAG collaboration in producing publishable results l Plan to study pile-up dependence of resolution in Resolution from Dijets Systematic Uncertainty  + Jet and Dijet JME

Jet Substructure Algorithms l Tagging hadronic decays of boosted top and W on huge QCD background è Utilizes specialized Cambridge-Aachen algorithm that finds sub-jets within jets è Jet pruning used to reduce effects of soft radiation, UE & pile-up on mass reco. l Critical tool for discovery of new physics: t tbar resonances, boosted higgs. 19 W tagging with Jet Pruning Top Tagging JME

JetMET DQM l Tasks è Weekly Data Certification è Data reprocessing Validation è MC release Validation è Special Requests à From DPGs and PVT à GFLASH and FastSim è Development of DQM Code l All tasks earn service points ! l Official Role è JetMET DQM runs as part of the central CMS DQM è Contact for DQM Offline shifters è Close contact with DPGs and PVT 21

JetMET DQM Data Certification l Great Experience for a Student è Develops hands on experience with data and know-how with JetMET objects l Weekly Data Certification è Each person in the certification pool does the certification for one week. è History DQM plots à Look at trends (e.g. jet pt, MET, MEx, MEy mean & RMS) vs run numbers è KS tests of histograms against reference run è We need 1-2 more people (students seeking service & experience) l Development of Automated Data Certification è Critical for robust, quick certification, reducing dependence on human factors. è Urgently need one person for this Automation & DQM code maintenance. l Get Experience and Service Points doing data certification for JetMET ! 22

Trigger Summary l 5E32 Menu is 15 Hz of Jets and 15 Hz of MET è Unprescaled Trig: Jet300U (5Hz), pfMHT150(3Hz), MET160_CenJet50U(6Hz) l Jet triggers now based on AK5 CaloJets è Jet corrections planned for trigger and corrected single jet thresholds are known l Very loose and safe CaloJet ID planned for trigger è Jet EMF > & N90Hits > 1 more than 99.9% efficient è Unprescaled high pt jet trigger will have a path without Jet ID for extra safety l Removing HF from MET paths at both L1 and HLT è Recommend unprescaled MET trigger with high threshold for safety l Plan to explore pile-up effects l Put to work 3 new people from PAGs (Thanks!) but more people needed. è Trigger sub-group is dangerously low on people given its critical mission. l For more details see Trigger Review talks on Monday 24

Service and Management 25

Service Points l JetMET provides service points for its service work l Much of the work in JetMET is clearly service work è Data quality monitoring and scanning è Trigger, software, and MC dataset support è Calibrations, resolutions and systematics provided to PAGs è General support of the standard jet and MET objects needed by CMS è Maintenance work as well as development is important è CMS requires this support to function and do physics l Some of the work is not service work è Studies of highly specialized jet or MET algorithms especially for exotic signals l Please come do service work for JetMET & we will give you service points ! 26

Workpackages & PF Integration l JetMET needs are documented in workpackages listed online at l Each workpackage is linked to a detailed description collected together at l We need more people to work on maintenance as well as development. l Many of the workpackages involve PF integration tasks è See status of all PF integration tasks in the backup. Some examples: à Charged/neutral hadrons calibration (maintenance) à Exploit particle content in Jets and MET (development) è Improve and maintain the incredible performance of PF Jets and MET l JetMET has led in PF measurements but now we must lead in PF support è PF is widely used for both jets and MET at CMS and needs our help l We need more people to work on PF support as well as development. 27

Coordination with PAG and DPG l JetMET has been benefiting from close contacts with both DPG and PAG l PAGs è QCD: Extensive and ongoing collaboration on jet calibration. è SUSY: Collaboration on jet resolutions and MET è Top: Collaboration on jet energy scale for b quarks and from top quarks è Many PAGs are contributing people for the JetMET trigger effort l DPGs è Close coordination via bi-weekly convener meetings of Hcal, Ecal and JetMET è Working with HCAL / ECAL on MET scanning and feedback on calibrations è Close collaboration with HCAL on PF integration issues 28

Conclusions l JetMET has published significant results with the 2010 dataset è We will have 10 PAS and plan for 2 JINST Papers l JetMET plans for 2011 include the following measurements and activities è MET tails, MET pile-up studies, and MET improvements. è Jet calibrations of pile-up, flavor, and reducing uncertainties è Jet resolution, Jet ID and Jet Algorithms for new physics è Data Quality Monitoring, Certification and Release Validation, Trigger Studies l Join us at JetMET è Get service points è Work in a friendly environment è Produce publications è More people needed for both development and maintenance. è There are many open tasks in all sub-groups and we need your help! l JetMET is looking forward to the exciting and demanding 2011 dataset ! 29
