Alternative Resources
Energy Resources. What are Fossil Fuels? Fossil Fuels are energy rich substances formed from the remains of once living organisms. The 3 main fossil fuels.
Alternative Energy Sources 90% of the energy used today is in the form of fossil fuels. Forms of energy OTHER than fossil fuels are termed “alternative”
Renewable & Non- renewable energy. Fossil Fuels 1.Name the main types of fossil fuels. 2.Explain briefly how they were made. 3.Why is there a problem.
Alternative Energies. Solar Energy Energy received by the earth from the sun. This is in the form of solar radiation which then make solar electricity.

SOURCES OF ENERGY

Unit 11 SOURCES OF ENERGY B. SPEAKING I. NEW WORDS 1.Reactor [ri:'æktə] ( n) : a large structure used for the controlled production of nuclear energy : lò phản ứng 2. Limited ['limitid] ( adj ): not a very great in amount : hạn chế, có giới hạn ->Unlimited [ ʌ n'limitid] (adj) : không giới hạn, 3. Renewable [ri'nju:əbl] (adj ) :replaced naturally: có thể hồi phục lại  non-renewable [,n ɔ n 'rezidənt] (adj ): không thể hồi phục lại

Task 1. The following statements list some advantages and disadvantages of various sources of energy. Read and tick ( ) the appropriate box A ( for the advantages ) or D (for the disadvantages ), then compare the results with partner’s.AD 1. Fossil fuels will be exhausted within a relatively short time.  2. Geothermal heat is available only in the few place in the world. 3.If the wind does not blow, there is no wind energy. 4. Water power provides energy without pollution. 5.A nuclear reactor releases radiation which is dangerous to the environment. 6. Solar energy is not only plentiful and unlimited but also clean and safe. 7.It is expensive to built a dam for hydroelectricity.

Task 2. Work in pairs. Talk with your friend about the advantages and disadvantages of using each alternative sources of energy, using the suggestions from Task 1. Example : A: I think/ believe that wind power can be an alternative sources of energy. B. Why do you think/ believe so? A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while the wind is abundant and unlimited. B: I know it is also clean and safe to the environment. However, it is not available when there is no wind.

Practice : Making the following conversation by using the available words and phrases. A: I think/ believe that ……can be an alternative sources of energy. B. Why do you think/ believe so? A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while ………………………… B: I know…………………………………. However, ……………………………………………………….. Useful language Sources of energy Advantages Disadvantages Nuclear power unlimited dangerous provide enough electricity Solar energy plentiful and unlimited only possible during clean and safe sunny days Water power clear and unlimited expensive create energy without pollution

Task 3.Work in groups. Express your belief on the increasing use of alternative sources in the future, using the ideas from Task 2 Sources of energy Most popular Reasons Solar energy Water energy Hydroelectricity Nuclear energy

Interviewer: Excuse me! Would you mind if I ask you some questions? Passer-by :I do not mind. Interviewer : W hat’s your name? Passer-by :My name’s………… Interviewer :What’s your job ? Passer-by :I’m a……………….. Interviewer :How old are you ? Passer-by :I’m ……………………. Interviewer :What energy is the most popular nowadays ? Passer-by :I think it’s……………………………………. Interviewer :Why do you think so ? Passer-by :Because …………………………. Interviewer :Thank you so much Passer-by :You’re welcome
