Warm-up: Now that you know what “culture” is, write about a movie or song that shows something important about our culture in the U.S. Give the name of the movie/song, briefly describe what it is about (2-3 sentences) and write about what you think it shows about U.S. culture (3-4 sentences).

 Period 5: turn in your warm-ups on the stool after class.  I still need syllabi from:  Period 2:  Period 4:  Period 5:  Homework: due Monday. (Revise your planner.)

STANDARDS Reading 3.12: Analyze the way in which a work of literature is related to the themes and issues of its historical period.

 Let’s watch some clips (movies, music videos, commercials, etc.) that show an important aspects of U.S. culture…  After each clip, I’ll have you answer questions based on what you see.

 Before we do, a reminder about using respectful language and respecting differences.  Rule 1: Always speak as if in this room, there is someone of every race, every religion, every gender, every age, and every sexual orientation.  Rule 2: Think before you speak; feet in mouth=gross.

 Sit down with a parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle… anyone 40 or older who you don’t mind spending twenty minutes with!  Interview them about what culture was like when they were growing up.  Ask the questions provided on the worksheet or any others that you can think of that would get them to share aspects of their culture as a child/teenager.  Write down their responses and organize them into paragraphs.  Due Friday!!!
