Plaisance, Ch. 4 “Justice”

Concepts of Justice Justice based on what is deserved (treatment based on merit) Justice based on need Justice based on equality Justice as fairness –John Rawls

Feminist criticisms of Rawls Benhabib: “We can aspire to Rawl’s ‘universal’ notion of justice, but it must be supplemented by an emphasis on caring for others by acknowledging the realities of individual lives” –Male centered: concern for fairness fails to address the female sphere of domestic relations and children

Feminist critique continued –Public sphere has priority; domestic sphere is devalued –Fails to address the importance of relationships

Examples for discussion Deporting Children Holding ISPs responsible for 3d party postings Labeling a person as an “enemy combatant” and subsequent treatment Corporate spending to support/defeat political candidates
