Homework  Homework is set on Thursday and must be returned on Tuesday.  Homework is directly linked to what your child is learning in school and is a vital part of their learning.  This year your child will get one piece of written homework; it will either be Maths or Literacy.  During the half term holidays your child will research a project linked to their new topic.  Some parts of the homework will be independent but other parts will require your support and guidance.  Please check your child’s homework and make sure it is of good quality.  Please make sure that your child has a quiet learning space in order to do their homework and at a set time.

Spellings Spellings are given on a Thursday and tested the following Thursday. It is expected that children understand the meaning of the words being tested as well as the spelling. The spellings are linked to the phonic phases.

Literacy Writing O Please encourage your child to write at home and read back to you what they have read. O Spelling is not the most important thing at the moment when writing - the content is!

Reading at home and school O Children are expected to read each night at home for 15 minutes and parents are asked to comment in their Reading Records. Levelled reading books are changed 2-3 times a week. O When you have finished reading it is very important that you ask your child questions about what you have read as this is what will determine if they have understood what they have read. O The reading books your child brings home is at an appropriate level for them. O Once your child has read the book there are some questions at the back of the book to ask them to help them develop their comprehension skills. O Children read with a teacher every week in Guided Reading sessions. O Please visit the Library.

Maths O How you can help your child O 2, 5 and 10 times tables (1x2=2…) O Telling the time O Money values and change O Number facts to 20 O Addition and subtraction The emphasis in maths is ‘show me, convince me’. Children need to show their understanding as well as knowing the facts.

Assessment in the New Curriculum No more levels!

Each Year Group will have Key Concepts for that year

O Teacher assessment in maths and reading informed by externally set, internally marked tests. O There will also be an externally set test in grammar, punctuation and spelling which will help to inform the teacher assessment of writing O These tests will take place in May and will reflect the New Curriculum and the first new assessments will take place this summer. KS1 Assessments

O Children in KS1 are entiled to free school meals. O School dinners: Children have a choice between a vegetarian, fish, meat or a halal hot lunch. There is also a fresh salad bar. O Packed Lunch: We are a ‘Healthy School’ which means that we promote healthy eating and do not allow fizzy drinks or sweets in packed lunches. O No sharing food. O No Nuts: Our school has a ‘No Nuts’ policy for all food on the premises as we have a lot of severe nut allergies in the school. Also be aware of nuts in other foods. School Lunch
