Unit 6 The weather in Hong Kong
Presentation transcript:

My First Typhoon in Hong Kong

On Tuesday, 2nd September, Typhoon Dujuan passed about thirty kilometres away from Hong Kong. This was my first time to experience a typhoon in Hong Kong and I thought it was quite exciting.

The weather report said that a typhoon was coming. Typhoon signal eight was hoisted and all schools closed. Because this was my first typhoon, I did not really know what to do.

However, my mother heard from our neighbour that we needed to buy some food and stay inside. We needed to tape the windows of our flat to keep them from breaking. I helped my mother to bring in the plants, too.

I watched the TV for the weather report. It said, “Staying outdoors during a typhoon is dangerous. Everyone should stay inside.” I was not very scared because I felt safe with my parents inside our flat.

From my flat, I saw trees bending over in the wind and many small trees and plants were falling over. All kinds of things were rolling across the road: plastic bags, leaves, an umbrella and a heavy rubbish bin. I even saw a T-shirt flying past my window -- and I live on the eighteenth floor! There was a flood on the path downstairs. It looked like a small river!trees bending over in the wind a flood

Dujuan was the most powerful typhoon to hit Hong Kong in four years. Strong typhoons like Dujuan have winds of about 63 – 117 kilometres per hour.

During strong typhoons, hundreds of flights can be cancelled. Shops, offices and schools close early so that people can return home quickly and safely. Typhoons can fell trees, hurt people, cause power cuts and landslides. Typhoons can cause a lot of damage. flightscancelled END
