IONIC BONDING When an atom of a nonmetal takes one or more electrons from an atom of a metal so both atoms end up with eight valence electrons.
Many ionic compounds are coloured. The colour of the compound is caused by the metal ion which is present in the compound. It is usually a transition.

Match the words to their definition and picture. Atom Ion Electron Compound A negative particle found in atoms. More than one element chemically joined. A charged atom. Smallest particle that can exist on its own. Na +

Objectives To be able to give a definition of an ion. To understand how to test for metal ions using the colour of a flame. To understand how to test for metal ions using sodium hydroxide.

Flame tests Dip the loop into metal salt sol n. Put the loop in the flame and note the colour.

Results Salt sol n (name and colour) Metal symbol Metal ion symbol Colour Sodium chloride Potassium chloride Copper chloride

Testing metal ions with NaOH 1. Put about a 2cm depth of the testing solution into a test tube. 2. Add about 1cm depth of NaOH. 3. Observe and note any colour. 4. If the contents are white; add about another 2cm depth of NaOH. 5. Observe and note if a solution is formed. What does the colour mean? Blue ppt – Cu 2+ Green ppt – Fe 2+ Brown ppt – Fe 3+ White ppt that dissolves – Al 3+ White ppt that is insoluble – Group 2 metal.

Results SolutionColour of precipitate Metal ion present A B C D E F

Homework Draw a key to show how sodium hydroxide can be used to identify metal ions.
