 You need two pieces of information: a position and a reference point

 Position describes the location of an object  Ex. What is the position of the projector?  Each time you identify the position of an object, you are comparing the location of the object with the location of another object or place

 A reference point is a location to which you compare other locations  Example:  The dog is running around the tree.  The race began at the START line.  The car is parked four aisles over from the store.

 Motion is a change in position over time.  An object moves, or is in motion, when it changes its position relative to a reference point.  When we analyze motion of an object, we are looking at such factors as speed, distance, time, and direction

 Distance is the length between two positions.  Distance depends on the path you take. The distance between two points can differ.

 When measuring distances, scientists use a standard unit of measurement (Metric System).  Distance = meter (m) = about 3.3 feet  Longer distances = kilometer (km) =1000 meters  Shorter distances = centimeter (cm) – 1/100 th of a meter  Crayon? Trip to Bldg 11? Bus ride to Downtown? Trip home?

 The speed of an object is a measure of how far something moves in a given amount of time  Speed measures how quickly or slowly the object changes position  Speed is a rate The measure of how one quantity (meters) measure compared to another (second)= m/s ◦ Ex: Over one kilometer, a faster object (running cheetah) will take less time to cover the distance than a slower object (walking cheetah)

 The speed of an object is rarely constant. (not changing)  Average speed is a way to calculate the speed of an object that may not always be moving at a constant speed.  Average speed describes the speed over a stretch of time. ◦ Ex: I drove at an average speed of 70mph on my way to Virginia.

 Speed can be calculated by dividing the distance an object travels by the time it takes to cover the distance.  s = d/t (speed = distance/time)  Units for speed = meters per second (m/s)  Longer distances and lengths of time = kilometers per hour (km/h)

 Mrs. Saintil’s team ran the 26.2 km in 5.25 hrs  s=d/t = 26.2km/5.25h = 4.99 km/h

 Velocity is speed in a specific direction  NonExample: Officer gives a speeding ticket for a car traveling at 100 km/h = Speed  Example: Officer gives a speeding ticket for a car traveling at 100 km/h westbound on Norman E. Thagard = Velocity  It is possible for two objects to have the same speed but different velocities? ◦ Going in different directions

 How do you determine the location of an object?  What is the relationship between distance and time for an object that is moving at a constant speed?
