Your heartbeat can be heard as a “Lub-dub” sound. The first heart sound (Lub) is caused by the mitral and tricuspid valves closing. The second heart sound (dub) is caused by the aortic and pulmonic valves closing.

Heart Murmurs Sounds like a swishing sound with the Lub dub sound. Caused by a valve not closing tightly or a hole in the septum

Cardiac Arrest When circulation completely stops to the rest of the body There is no pulse because the heart is not pumping blood A person becomes unconscious because oxygen is not delivered to the brain Drug overdosing can cause someone to go into cardiac arrest

Heart Attacks This is different than cardiac arrest A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and interrupts blood flow to the heart, causing heart muscle to die. a fatty material called plaque (plak) builds up over many years on the inside walls of the coronary arteries

Enlarged Heart Chicago Bears player, Gaines Adams died last year from an enlarged heart Enlarged heart tells you that the heart is being overworked. This can mean there is something wrong with the heart anatomically Or there is too much physical pressure on the heart

Stroke Blood supply to brain is interrupted Brain cannot get oxygen FAST = acronym to help diagnose if person is having a stroke – Face, Arm, Speech, Time

Quiz Practice – Scenarios What disease or disorder is being described? Why? The actor Heath Ledger died accidentally “from the abuse of prescription medications”. When paramedics arrived, they noticed there was no pulse and Mr. Ledger was unconscious (passed out) and unresponsive to treatment. They tried CPR but where unable to revive the actor. After an autopsy was performed, combinations of drugs were found in Mr. Ledger’s system. Cardiac Arrest – drug overdose, CPR, unconscious, no pulse = no circulation = heart has not pumped blood.

Quiz Practice – Scenarios What disease or disorder is being described? Why? Jeron Lewis, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Southern Indiana, died last year from an apparent heart condition after he fell and hit his head on the court Thursday night. An autopsy revealed that his heart was very overworked and probably due to the strenuous activity needed to play college basketball. Enlarged Heart – overworked heart, strenuous physical activity

Quiz Practice – Scenarios What disease or disorder is being described? Why? In 1988, Mike Ditka, coach of the Chicago Bears was hospitalized. He was overweight and had high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The doctor said Ditka had a blocked artery that was restricting blood flow to the heart. After examining the extent of the blockage, doctors ordered an emergency bypass surgery. Heart Attack – overweight, high cholesterol & BP, blocked artery that was restricting blood flow to the heart

Quiz Practice – Scenarios What disease or disorder is being described? Why? After completing a successful 2005 season for the New England Patriots, Tedy Bruschi was hospitalized after suffering terrible headaches. When paramedics came to take him to the hospital, they applied the FAST acronym to determine his condition  his face was droopy, his arm drifted and his speech was slurred. They realized that it was a medical emergency because blood flow to his brain was interrupted. Stroke – blood flow interrupted to brain, FAST to determine condition
