 A region in South America  Consists of the mighty Amazon river  And, a jungle forest  Stretches over 7 million sq. kilometers 

Most of the Amazon Forest is in Brazil. It also covers parts of Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

 It has existed for more than 55 million years  It has survived many climate changes (e.g. ice ages)  A huge variety of plants and animals live there

 One in ten known species in the world lives in the Amazon Rainforest.  2.5 million insect species  Tens of thousands of plants  2000 birds and mammals  To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 2,200 fishes 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the Amazon

 Human inhabitants first settled in the Amazon region at least 11,200 years ago
