Donatello By Aoifé Gale

Donatello Donatello was Italian, born in 1386 in Florence. He died in Florence in 1466.

He worked for Lorenzo Ghiberti. Helping him to make the 1st set of Baptistry doors between 1404-07. However soon enough he started to work on his own and he outshone Ghiberti!

Donatello carved marble statues for the cathedral and its bell tower. In the 15th century the cathedral of Florence and the church of the Florentine guilds were being decorated. Donatello carved marble statues for the cathedral and its bell tower.

. Donatello’s relief bronze piece ‘The Feast of Herod’ shows how he too was an early master of perspective.

The ancient Romans were fond of carving soldiers on horseback. Donatello revived this tradition with his bronze sculpture of ‘Gattamelata’. It stands 3.5 metres high above the ground, in Padova town square to this day!
