The European Union

 “United in Diversity” is the slogan  27 Member States (Primarily in Europe)  Economic and Political Union  Operated by a Parliament  500 million inhabitants  Generates 21% of the global economy and 20% of global imports and exports

The Euro  The Euro was introduced in 2002 to replace national currencies in 17 countries.  Same currency used in 17 of the 27 EU countries  € (symbol)  $ = 1 Euro

How do you get into the EU?  Must meet the Copenhagen criteria  Stable democracy that respects human rights and the rule of law  Functioning market economy capable of competition within the EU  Acceptance of the obligations of membership, including EU law

Military & Humanitarian Aid  There is NO one unified military  21 of the 27 members are part of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)  European Commissions Humanitarian Aid Office or ECHO provides humanitarian aid from the EU to developing countries  Largest aid donor in the world.
