IS OLIVE OIL REAL? Agenda: 1) What is Olive Oil? 2) What kinds of Olive Oil are out there? 3) Extra Virgin Olive Oil – And what is wrong with it? 4) What you can do

WHAT IS OLIVE OIL?

TYPES OF OLIVE OIL Olive-Pomace Oil Light Olive Oil Pure Olive Oil (Olive Oil) Virgin Olive Oil Extra Virgin Olive Oil

OLIVE POMACE

HEXANE (C6 H14) Hexane: 1) byproduct of petroleum and crude oil refinementcrude oil 2) hexanes are used in the formulation of glues for shoes, leather products, and roofing. Warning “Hexane has been identified by the FDA as a potent neurotoxin and a carcinogen” safety/2014/11/19/understanding-the- hazards-of-hexane

WHAT IS EXTRA VIRGIN? EVOO Standards: 1) Only from the fruit (no pits) 2) No processing 3) Must be “cold-pressed”  Under 80 degrees Farenheight 4) Acidity level must be below 0.5% 5) Oil must be free of defects from testers

BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL 1) The phytonutrient in olive oil, oleocanthal, mimics the effect of ibuprofen in reducing inflammation, which can decrease the risk of breast cancer and its recurrence. 2) Squalene and lignans are among the other olive oil components being studied for their possible effects on cancer. 3) Olive oil lowers the levels of total blood cholesterol. 4) Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, especially vitamin E, long thought to minimize cancer risk.

BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL 5) Decrease Blood Pressure 6) Reduce Obesity 7) Improve Diabetes conditions 8) Diets containing high levels of olive oil are less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoporosis Source: Olive Oil Times: Health and Nutrition benefits of Olive Oil

TOM MUELLER Tom Mueller broke the story about how more than 70% of the extra-virgin olive oil sold in the world is fake (cut with cheaper oils)70% of the extra-virgin olive oil sold in the world is fake Source: Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil

A SCAM? In 2014, Forbes magazine stated, “A scam, meaning it’s likely been mixed with colorants and other less expensive oils like sunflower-seed oil.” Source: Forbes Magazine: The Scam Of Olive Oil, And Its Antidot

ITALIAN MAFIA "Profits [in olive oil fraud] were comparable to cocaine trafficking, with none of the risks." “95% of olive oil fraud is in oil coming from Italy.” Source: Forbes Magazine: Italy's Food Mafia Seeps Beyond Fake Olive Oil

COUNTERFEIT EXTRA VIRGIN “In 2005 Italian authorities broke up one criminal gang with 100,000 liters of fake olive oil — worth almost $8 million.” 007/08/13/slippery-business

MISLABELING “Italian Olive Oil?” Actually, Spain, Tunisia, Greece, Syria, Turkey, Morocco

WHAT YOU CAN DO? 1) Read the back of the label  Look for an expiration date (2 years after its labeled)  Harvest Date – you only want oil picked within 2 years  Bottle color – clear bottles destroy the quality of oil

WHAT CAN YOU DO Real olive oil – the good stuff – will be powerful and peppery and it will catch in your throat. You may cough, your eyes may water. But these are in fact good indications that what you’re tasting – finally! – is authentic.
