Elements of Design The seven basic building blocks of art & design.
LINE SHAPE COLOR VALUE TEXTURE SPACE FORM Design Elements BALANCE VARIETY MOVEMENT CONTRAST EMPHASIS PROPORTION UNITY Design Principles
A mark that can have thickness, direction & movement. Lines can be interrupted and can show emotion in an artwork. Line
Organic Line Geometric Line Interrupted Line Gestural Line Contour Line Varied Line
When a line curves or corners around and ends where it began it becomes a shape. Shape
Organic Shape Geometric Shape Overlapping shape
Color has three main properties: 1.Hue 2.Value 3.Intensity Color
HUE: The name of a color VALUE: The lightness or darkness of a color INTENSITY: The brightness or dullness of a color
Color WARM & COOL
The lightness or darkness of a hue. Value
Tints: add white to create a lighter color Value creates the illusion of volume, light & space Shades: add black to create a darker color.
The implied or actual surface quality: Smooth, rough, bumpy, glossy, etc. Texture
Hatching & Cross Hatching Line can be used to create value and textures
Stippling Small marks/dots can be used to create value and textures
The amount of depth in both 2D and 3D compositions; occupied & unoccupied space. Space
The quality of a shape; the illusion of volume. Ex. Cubes, spheres and cones Form
Principles of Design The basic rules of aesthetics that guide in the organization of elements in a work of art.
LINE SHAPE COLOR VALUE TEXTURE SPACE FORM Design Elements BALANCE VARIETY MOVEMENT CONTRAST EMPHASIS PROPORTION UNITY Design Principles
An appearance of evenness in an artwork. There are two kinds: Symmetry & Asymmetry Balance
Radial Vertical Horizontal Asymmetrical
A large difference between elements. Green and Red, dark and light, large and small, thin and thick, bright and dull. Contrast
Where an artist draws attention to one or more parts of a composition. Emphasis
The path the viewer’s eye is directed to take by the artist’s choice of elements such as line. Movement
Small differences in elements within a composition. Variety in sizes, colors, etc. Variety
Variety - Pattern Pattern uses the art elements in planned or random repetitions to enhance surfaces of paintings or sculptures.
The relationship of size in a composition in relation to how they are viewed in reality. Proportion
Unity A sense that all of the parts belong together creating a cohesive composition; nothing is out of place.
