End Punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, questions marks) When the sentence ends with the quote, the period goes inside the quotation mark. If the sentences does NOT end on the quote, then the period goes at the end of the sentence. If the quote ends on a question mark (?) or exclamation point (!), then include those marks as part of the quote, and put a period at the end of the sentence. Examples  North Americans must change their eating habits before it’s too late. It depends on how you are leading in to the quote.  Examples Atticus tells his children it’s “a sin to kill a mockingbird.” No lead-in punctuation needed because quote is part of sentence. When Odysseus killed Antinous, “He drew to his fist the cruel head of an arrow.” A comma is needed before this quote because you are leading into it with an introductory phrase. In his speech at the 9/11 Museum dedication, President Obama declared: “nothing can change who we are as Americans.” A colon is needed because there is a strong break in thought before the quote.
