Lesson 5: Punctuating Quotes 1 Here are the basic rules for punctuating quotes: 1. Quotation Marks Put quotation marks (“ ”) around the exact words from the original source. Do not put quotation marks around paraphrases (putting someone’s thoughts in your words)

Lesson 5: Punctuating Quotes 1 Here are the basic rules for punctuating quotes: 2. End Punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, questions marks) When the sentence ends with the quote, the period goes inside the quotation mark. If the sentences does NOT end on the quote, then the period goes at the end of the sentence. If the quote ends on a question mark (?) or exclamation point (!), then include those marks as part of the quote, and put a period at the end of the sentence. Examples  North Americans must change their eating habits before it’s too late. The New England Journal of Medicine reported in 2005 that “because of obesity, Americans for the first time in centuries, are projected to have a shorter life expectancy.” This frightening statistic should be enough for parents to think twice about what they feed their children.  “What’s the matter, Nick?” Jason asked.

Lesson 5: Punctuating Quotes 1 3. Commas Commas before a quote start do NOT go inside the quotation mark. Commas at the end of a quote DO go inside the quotation mark.  Examples Clara said, “If people were like rain, I was like drizzle and she was like a hurricane.” I know we’re supposed to “turn the other cheek,” but I’m having a hard time doing that.

Lesson 5: Punctuating Quotes 1 4. Lead Ins When a quote is incorporated as part of the sentence, a comma (,) or colon (:) may be needed before the quote. It depends on how you are leading in to the quote.  Examples Atticus tells his children it’s “a sin to kill a mockingbird.” No lead-in punctuation needed because quote is part of sentence. When Odysseus killed Antinous, “He drew to his fist the cruel head of an arrow.” A comma is needed before this quote because you are leading into it with an introductory phrase. In his speech at the 9/11 Museum dedication, President Obama declared: “nothing can change who we are as Americans.” A colon is needed because there is a strong break in thought before the quote.

Instructions: Explain what is wrong with the punctuation of each quote. 1. When Ralph cries, he is crying: “for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy”. 2. After June’s humiliating piano recital, Waverly adds insult to injury by declaring, “You aren’t a genius like me”! 3. In a commencement speech given at Stanford in 2006, Steve Jobs stated that: “I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple”. 4. Joe said, “I live in Lehi.”, but he really lives in downtown Salt Lake City. 5. An-Mei teaches Rose that a girl, “must stand tall and listen to your mother standing next to you. That is the only way to stand tall and straight”.
