FLASH CARD REVIEW: Cell Membrane Transport

What is the Cell Membrane composed of? Phospholipid Bilayer Proteins embedded

What is the Function of the Cell Membrane? Control movement in + out of cell Protection

Where is the Cell Membrane on Cells? The outer covering!

What is a Cell Wall in Plants composed of? Cellulose

What is the Function of the Cell Wall? Extra Structure Extra Protection

Where is the Cell Wall on Cells? The very outside! Outside & Around the Cell Membrane!

What types of organisms have Cells Walls? Plants Some Bacteria Fungi

What is Diffusion? The movement of particles (across a concentration gradient) from an area of HIGH to LOW concentration!

What is Osmosis? The movement of water particles (across a concentration gradient) from an area of HIGH water (low solute) concentration, to an area of LOW water (high solute) concentration.

During Diffusion & Osmosis, will particles ALL move to ONE side? No. Particles want to be evenly spread out. Want to reach equilibrium.

Some of your cells are immersed in a hypertonic solution. What will happen? They will shrink + shrivel. Water will rush out.

Some of your cells are immersed in a hypotonic solution. What will happen? They will swell + burst. Water will rush into the cells.

A saltwater organism is placed in a hypotonic solution. What will happen? Its cells will swell + burst. Water will rush into its cells.

What is a solute? The solid stuff you mix with liquid.

What is a solvent? The liquid stuff.

What does it mean to say that the Cell Membrane is Semi- Permeable? Only certain substances can diffuse in and out of the membrane.

What is the name for the type of membrane transport which requires ENERGY?! Active Transport

What are 2 types of Passive Transport? Diffusion Osmosis
