Presentation transcript:

September 14, 2015 An atom of a certain element has 36 protons, 36 electrons, and a mass number of 84. At room temperature this element is a very stable gas. How many neutrons are in this atom?

Coloring the periodic table 1. Label groups 1-18. In your notebook: Groups are also called families. Groups 1 and 2 and 13-18 all share the same number of valence electrons. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties and react with other elements in similar ways.

Coloring the periodic table 2. Number the periods 1-7. In your notebook: The rows on the periodic table are called periods. The atomic number increases by one as you move left to right across a period. All the elements in a period have the same number of electron shells.

Coloring the periodic table 3. Color the non- metals.

Non-Metals have these physical properties… No luster (dull appearance) Poor conductor of heat and electricity Brittle (breaks easily) Most are gases

Exit ticket How does the organization of the periodic table help us make predictions?
