The Invention Convention

The Water Frame - Richard Arkwright What Did It Do? - Harnessed the power of running water to produce dozens of cotton threads at a single time What Did It Change? -Thread could be spun at a high quality, quickly -Encouraged the building of textile mills by rivers/streams -Lowered the cost of cotton cloth and increased the spread of production

Interchangeable Parts - Eli Whitney What Did It Do? - Parts of a machine that are identical that allow for machines to be quickly built and repaired What Did It Change? -Sped up mass production (efficient production of large #’s of identical goods) -Machines/goods can be quickly built/repaired -Cost of goods cheaper

Steel Plow - John Deere What Did It Do? - Made possible to plow tough, thick soils that iron plows could not What Did It Change? - Allowed for more farmland to be created, increasing food production and farmer profits

Mechanical Reaper - Cyrus McCormick What Did It Do? - Quickly cut, thrashed and bundled wheat/corn What Did It Change? - Farmers could harvest more wheat/corn faster then ever, combined w/ steel plow, farmers growing more food than ever

The Cotton Gin –Eli Whitney What Did It Do? - Quickly and efficiently removed seeds from cotton What Did It Change? -Could do the same amount of work as 10 slaves in one day -Huge amounts of cotton could now be processed, therefore increasing demand of raw cotton -Saved institution of slavery as more slaves were needs to plant/grow/harvest/process raw cotton

Sewing Machine - Isaac Singer What Did It Do? - Efficiently made and repaired clothing that was accessible and affordable What Did It Change? -Sewing machine became affordable and accessible to more people -Sped up making/repairing of clothing

The Telegraph – Samuel F.B Morse What Did It Do? -A device that could send information over wires across great distances using Morse Code -Morse Code – different combinations of dots and dashes that represent each letter of the alphabet What Did It Change? -Communication became almost instant -People far away from each other could now communicate easily and quickly -Created a more unified country/economy
