Managing Your Career & Goal Setting Peggy McLemore

Where do you begin? n Design a Mission Statement u sets forth values to live by u establishes future goals n We all need a sense of: u purpose u reason for being u this becomes validated when we have a personal, written mission statement

Activity n Examples: u I am dedicated to pursuing a successful life with dignity, honesty, and integrity u I am committed to loyalty before all else except honor and integrity n Consider you own mission statement n Write it down - 1 or 2 statements n Who wants to share their statement?

Goal Setting n A map or action plan to ensure that you will reach the goal or destination of your choosing n Your mission statement and goal work hand in hand

Activity n Using your mission statement you are going to write down your personal goal u this will include short and long term goals n Short term u completed within next 12 months n Long term u 3,5,10 years or more

Activity n Reexamine goals often u ensures you stay on track u evaluate and make more as you achieve each one n Remember - goal setting is a key ingredient of self-management and that is the fuel that keeps you going

Evaluate your plan n If you are not sure that your goal setting plan is a good one, ask these questions. u are there specific skills I will need to learn in order to meet my goals? u Is the information I need to reach my goals readily available? u Am I comfortable asking for help?

EVALUATE YOUR PLAN u Would I be willing to seek out a mentor or a coach to enhance my learning? u What is the best method or approach that will lead me to accomplish my goals? u Am I always open to finding better ways of putting my plan into practice?

. If you answered “NO” to any of these questions, re- evaluation of your commitment and of the goals may be needed
