 Each inmate must be ‘classified’ to determine their security level and individual program needs. This balances the needs of the inmate with the general public, the victims, correctional staff and other offenders. The process of managing and assessing risk is continual.  Two types of risk assessment are used  Actuarial Tools (collecting historical data about the offender – age of offence, number of convictions, history of substance abuse, etc.)  Clinical Judgement (based on the opinion of psychologists and psychiatrists who assess the offender)  Based on the classification, a correctional plan will be designed to support the inmate’s reintegration into the community.
