Volume of a prism The general formula for the volume of a prism is: V = AH L B H V = LBH Cube S S S V = S 3 A = cross-sectional area (the face that is the same on either end) H = perpendicular height of prism (distance the two congruent end faces) More specifically Rectangular prism
Example 1 Find the volume of the following 12m 5m 7m V = AH = ½bh × H = ½ × 12 × 7 × 5 = 210 m 3
Example 2 Find the volume of the following 10m 2m 6m V = AH = area of trapezium × height of prism = ½ × 6 × (10 + 3) × 2 = 78 m 3 3m
Example 3 Find the volume of the following V = AH = area of front face × height of prism = (rectangle – triangle) × 3 = (lw – ½ bh) × 3 = (12 × 10 – ½ × 8 × 6) × 3 = (120 – 24) × 3 = 96 × 3 = 288 m 3 12m 8 m 6m 3m 10m
