Brody School of Medicine Mission Statement:  To increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve the state  To improve the health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina  To enhance the access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education

 As you can see the School of Medicine has had a focus on public service, regional transformation and creating a strong successful and sustainable future for eastern North Carolina.  The question has been asked in this project, “What does the school do to honor its mission?” When we examine the impact of the school of medicine and Professor Ralph Scott’s commentary, we realize that all of eastern NC has been impacted in the very way that the mission statement describes. It has greatly increased the supply of primary care physicians by the thousands. It has been a major vehicle for the improved health status of hundreds of thousands of eastern NC residents. It has provided access to minority and disadvantage students so that they may get medical education.

 We were also called to examine what does ECU do that’s unique because of where it is? ECU’s uniqueness can be found in its eclectic background and unique devotion to regional advancement throughout its history.  Two other schools that are closely related to Brody School of Medicine are the Schools of Dentistry and College of Nursing. We will examine their Vision/ Mission statements as well.
