Tony Tran | ITEC4900 Internship Program with Dr. Rowan | 2/9/09

Outline  Who I will be working with.  What does his department do.  What are his responsibilities.  What are his current projects/assignments.  Ideas for internship.  Issues found at GGC.  Goals for next meeting.

Who I will be working with  Antonio Quesada  Member of Information System Security at GGC.  Handles Operations & Securities at GGC.  Handles all building and maintenance of servers.

What does his department do  Operations – deals with servers only, no desktops.  Data networks  Voice mergers  Active directories  Hardware maintenance  protocols

What does his department do  Security- deals with both servers & desktops.  Handles public & private information.  Keeps information secure.  Create security policies.  Handles account information.

What are his responsibilities.  Make public information public but secure so it can not be altered.  Handles CC transactions for Student Accounts but keeps private information secure.  Keeps confidential information private such as social security, addresses, etc.  Handles all hardware issues.

What are his current projects & assignments.  Telephone service- currently using proprietary system and looking to move to an open source.  Proprietary system allows only adding and deleting extensions.  Open source system allows the above with much more customization for GGC needs.

What are his current projects & assignments.  Digital Signage- the display that is shown on all plasma TVs across campus.  Currently, each plasma is hooked up to a single computer.  Is capable of being modified remotely however still each plasma has its individual computer hooked to up.  Ultimate goal is to have a centralized location to modify any and all plasma displays from one computer.

Ideas for Internship  Develop a FAQ of IT related questions & answers from students.  Currently student accounts is very limited.  No place with FAQ questions aside from helpdesk.  Helpdesk logs everything but on an individual basis.  No global publication of these comments from students.  Currently still a lot of bugs to work out and implementations yet to be implemented.

Ideas for Internship  Talked about creating a survey of questions from students.  Addressing them to the director’s meeting every Thursday.  Improving the system here at GGC one step at a time.  Which steps may be implemented with current equipment & human resources.  Which steps require additional hardware.

Issues found so far:  Students not able to “right-click.”  No global account for students.  No FAQ posted anywhere.  Digital signage for emergency broadcasting or event notifications.

Goals for next meeting  Find more information on issues reported and propose possible solutions.  Research digital signage issue.  Come up with a list of survey questions to present to Antonio Quesada.
