CRIMINAL LAW Objective: Know the rights a person has when arrested Recognize a person’s potential criminal liability for the actions of others Understand the justifiability of the common defenses to criminal charges Bellwork: We will finish our video then discuss Punishments for Crimes. On Monday and Tuesday next week we will review for our first Summative Test over Criminal Law.

 Today we will be finishing the video about the Lena Baker story. There are questions you will need to answer AFTER the video but during the video I simply ask that you are awake and paying attention.  This is NOT nap time!!!

 A penalty provided by law and imposed by a court is called a punishment.  The purpose is to discipline the wrongdoer, not to remedy the wrong.  In theory the punishment should deter similar behavior from others.  Criminal statutes ordinarily set maximum limits for punishment, but allow a judge discretion within those limits.

 An accused person may agree to plead guilty to a less serious crime in exchange for having a more serious charge, this is called a plea bargain.  With a plea bargain the accused voluntarily gives up the right to a public trial to avoid the risk of a greater penalty if convicted.
