Finding solid information in a networked world Information Skills at Malone University

Helping students acquire information skills Benefits for students Information access skills set Implementation Integration Application

Benefits for Students What will students gain through learning and using information skills?

Benefits for Students Discover higher quality resources for their class projects Evaluate the usefulness and validity of information Integrate research into their thinking and writing

Benefits for Students Turn in improved completed assignments Use information responsibly and ethically Acquire tools for lifelong learning

Information Access Skills What skills do students need to learn?

Students should be able to… Recognize the need for information and identify potential sources (EG: A3,E2) Evaluate the nature and extent of the information needed Select an efficient route to the most authoritative information (EG: D4) (EG = Educational Goal)

Implementation How can we work together to help students acquire these skills?

You already have a departmental liaison. Each academic department has its own librarian, ready to assist you with your own research needs and to work with you as you teach our students.

How can we help you? Meet with you to identify courses that require information skills Help you integrate information skills education and assignments into your courses Collaborate with you to develop effective evaluation strategies to assess student mastery of information skills Notify you of research resources

Integration How will this cooperation move beyond individual courses and isolated faculty/librarian projects?

The Big Picture The university-wide vision will be the result of cooperation between: General Education Committee Individual Faculty Academic Departments Library Staff Student Senate

Application Let’s get started!

Let’s Get Started Customized in-class training (everything from full class sessions to 5- or 10-minute demonstrations) Faculty research support (let us know what you’re working on and we’ll forward any related resources we find) Up to date bibliographies (give us the subject and we’ll prepare a list of books, articles, links—even eCompanion webliographies)

Let’s Get Started Co-authored articles Joint library collection development Wiki subject guides accessible to students and faculty

Let’s Start Now! _____ Fill in your suggestion here! Contact your library liaison with all your suggestions, questions, comments, requests, projects, wishes, dreams, etc.
