DO’s and DON’Ts in Russia 1. DO participate in cooking with your host family / friends…In Russia, people rarely eat at the restaurants, most of the food is home-made! Besides being able to try the yummiest Russian foods, it’s also a great cultural experience for you. 2. DON’T pet any dogs/cats etc. on the streets…there’re a lot of homeless dogs out on the streets you need to be careful with…not only they are not properly vaccinated sometimes, they also might be very aggressive… 3. DO try Russian soups! This is the most popular meal in winter time. Most of the soups look very different from what you got used to – they are not creamy…Traditionally, every Russian family has hot soup for lunch (don’t forget about mayo!! )

DO’s and DON’Ts in Russia 4. DO remember that the metric system is completely different in Russia! No one does lbs, inches, miles. oz etc. Instead, there’re kilograms, centimeters, kilometers, liters…Have a conversion table with you! 5. DON’T hesitate to use English words if you forgot your Russian! Most of the Russians know the words “drink”, “telephone”, “airport”, “money”, “sausage”, “love story” ( ), “vodka” (obviously), “computer”, “beautiful”, etc. 6. DO have a small pack of napkins with you in your bag / purse…they are very appreciated considering that most of the public restrooms don’t have any toilet paper / paper towels!  7. DON’T waste your time looking for a trash can on the street. There is just zero of them. You might get lucky to find one a mile away from you, and yet it will be filled with trash over the top (might not be true for Pskov though).
