King Alfred Reigned from The Irish and continental missionaries converted Anglo- Saxon kings to Christianity and introduced it to his people Christianity provided a common faith and a common system of morality and right to conduct; it also linked England to Europe With the help of Christianity, he unified and led the Anglo-Saxons against the Danes defending their church, people, and their culture Ethelfda (a brilliant military Leader and strategist) and her brother Edward, carried on his battle against the Danes

 They lived in Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, England  Their society developed from kinship groups led by a strong chief  They all show loyal dependency to the king  They tend to live close to their animals in single-family homesteads, wooden buildings that surround a communal court or a warm, fire-lit chieftain's hall  The cluster of buildings was protected by a wooden stockade fence and the arrangement contributed to a sense of security and to the close relationship between leader and followers: this encouraged the tendency to participate in community discussion and rule by consents  The people formed, maintained local governments, and created fine crafts, especially metalwork

King Alfred of Wessex reigned King Alfred led Anglo-Saxons against invading the Danes. The Danes took over Northeast and Central England. Christianity was introduced when King Alfred converted. WHAT HISTORICAL EVENTS TOOK PLACE DURING THIS TIME PERIOD?

 Latin remained the language of serious study.  English had started to gain respect as a language of culture, only old English stories and poetry preserved by monks came to be recognized as great works of literature.  Beowulf is the first great work of the English National literature.

* Burton Raffel * Many writers were not found out during this era because the stories were told orally and the monks didn’t start recording stories till the end of this era

WHAT TYPE OF LITERATURE WAS PRIMARILY PRODUCED DURING THIS ERA ? Anglo-Saxons believed everything natural was controlled by Spirits or Gods Most stories told were about warriors, heroes, and spiritual warriors (Thor, and Odin for example) Literature was produced from telling stories about their God’s. We get the days of the week from their God’s names.  Thunar was a deity, essentially the same as Thor. Norse God of thunder and lightning. Thursday= Thor’s Day  The most important Norse God was Odin, the God of death, poetry, and magic. Anglo- Saxon’s name for Odin was Woden. Wednesday= Woden’s day woden Thunar/ Thor

 The one major work of literature is Beowulf!

Ireland while isolated from Germanic invasion Experienced a golden age. Irish monks founded monasteries that became sanctuaries of learning for refugee scholars from England. Then, in 432, the whole of Celtic Ireland was converted to Christianity by a Romanized Briton named Patricius.
